Willie Mae Smith, affectionately known by her loved ones as "Mae Mae," passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025 at her home in Dayton, Ohio at the age of 77. Born on August 20, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, Mae Mae was a vibrant soul who touched the lives of everyone around with her warmth, humor, and nurturing soul.
A devoted matriarch, Mae Mae was cherished by her family and friends alike. She embraced her role as mother, grandmother, sister, auntie and friend with great passion and dedication. Her four beloved children: Sheryl, John Maceo (Cierra), Marvin and Thomas were the pride of her life. As a grandmother, she was a constant source of love and laughter for her grandchildren: Jasmin, Nikia, Arniah, Shamar, Destiny, Paitence, Eva, Carmella and Justin. Although, some grandchildren are unnamed, her love for them was boundless.
Willie Mae's career in education and the medical field exemplified her compassionate nature and commitment to helping others. Beyond her professional endeavors, Mae Mae enjoyed family gatherings, card playing, music, dancing, and cooking delicious meals that brought everyone together. Social events were a highlight for her, where she would light up the room with her infectious laughter and warm presence.
Mae Mae will be fondly remembered by her soulmate, Gene Cook; brother, James, who shared a special bond with her and supported each other through thick and thin. Her cherished memories are preserved in the hearts of all who knew her.
Mae Mae's legacy is one of love and devotion, continuing to inspire those she left behind. She was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice and her sister, Ruthie. Her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched.
