William “Dale” Weddington, died June 21, 2026 at home surrounded by his family. Dale was born May 24, 1935, in New Boston, OH, the youngest child of William and Mabel (Rankins) Weddington. Dale moved with his family to Dayton when he was six years of age. Dale had fond memories of growing up in Dayton’s Overlook Homes neighborhood with his many childhood friends. His favorite recollection was that he and his beloved brother Frank, the “Weddington boys”, usually were blamed for neighborhood pranks, whether responsible or not. A tall, handsome, popular, well-built young man, Dale lettered in football at Wilbur Wright High School. After graduation in 1954, he began employment with the City of Dayton as a survey crew laborer. He was drafted into the US Army and served a two-year stint in Germany, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon discharge, he resumed his City of Dayton surveying career. He married Rosemary Walton Jackson in 1959, and they resided in Eastmont where they reared two daughters and a son. After an eight-year surveyor apprenticeship, he became a successful registered surveyor. He was well-respected for his diplomacy, knowledge, and skill. He retired from the City of Dayton Water Dept. in 1987 after 33 years of service. After Rosemary’s death in 1992, he met his spouse, Carol, in 2001 at a Valentine’s Day Dance, and they wed in 2002.
Dale loved music, especially blues, country, black gospel, and jazz. Ray Charles’ “America” and Brooks and Dunn’s “I Believe” were two of his favorite musical selections. He had a beautiful, deep singing voice and a natural sense of rhythm. As a teenager, he was a vocalist with a local country band, singing Eddy Arnold renditions. He quit smoking “cold turkey”, and learned to ballroom dance. He took pride in his appearance and kept his dress shoes polished. He cut an elegant figure on the dance floor.
Around his Northridge home, Dale enjoyed woodworking projects, bird watching, and lawn care. He was proud of his “Snapper” mower, and he received Harrison township recognition for his meticulously-groomed lawn. He had a weakness for Esther Price candy and vanilla ice cream. His favorite relaxation was to sit in his “oversized recliner” while eating, napping, or watching TV. He enjoyed old westerns, old movies, crime shows, “COPS”, “American Idol”, “Dancing with the Stars”, boxing, football, and recalling TV trivia. He liked his remotes, both to his big screen TV and to his Honda Accord. Operating either TV controls or car doors manually was foreign to him.
Dale loved his family unconditionally. Dale was an involved, supportive parent to his children. He attended all their sporting events, took his family fishing and taught them how to clean their catch. Dale was a loving, trusting, secure husband, who placed his spouse above all else. Outwardly, Dale appeared to be a tough guy, but he was a softie at heart. Dale’s parents taught him to be a respectful gentleman, firm when necessary. Young and old alike were drawn to him. Although he was not an openly-religious person, Dale had a strong belief in a loving God and lived an exemplary life.
Preceded in death by his parents, spouse Rosemary, daughter Penny Kingsley, siblings John Henry “Hennie” “Doc” and spouse Mary Weddington, Franklin “Frank” and spouse Donna Weddington, Geraldine “Gerry” and Jack Hunter, step-son Roy “Rusty” Phillips and great grandson Hayden Kingsley.
Dale leaves loving memories of him for his survivors: spouse Carolyn “Carol” Weddington; children: Vicky Weddington and William “Scott” Weddington; step-daughters: Brenda (Randy) Brown and Laura (Jon) Bango; eight grandchildren: Nathan, Aaron (Casey), Sarah, Adam (Alecia), Laura (Finn) Kingsley; Samantha (Patrick) Nolot, William “Steven”, Matthew (Anna) and Tristan Weddington; seven step-grandchildren: Grace, Chloe, Ian Bango; Owen, Silas, Elliot and Cecilie Phillips; ten great-grandchildren: Savannah, Vanessah, Alexa Kingsley; Noah, Lucas Robb; Curtis, Jr., Bryce, Cooper Green; Maverick, Everly Weddington, and numerous extended family.
