Willard James Blue, a man marked by devotion, service, and a gentle spirit, passed away on June 1, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on September 11, 1933, in Danville, Illinois, Willard's life was a poignant tapestry woven with steadfast commitment to his country, family, and passions.

From a young age, Willard exhibited a deep sense of duty and courage, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps at just 17 years old. Between January 1951 and January 1954, he served with valor in the 8th Marine Regiment, attached to the 6th Naval Fleet. His tenure included combat duty during the Korean War, spanning over a year with distinction. His honorable discharge carried decorations reflective of his bravery and dedication, including the Korean Presidential Medal, the National Defense Medal with two bronze stars, the Naval Unit Citation, among other commendations. Throughout his life, Willard was profoundly proud of his military service, a cornerstone of his identity that shaped his resolve and character.

Following his honorable service, Willard embarked on a career that began in the shoe retail industry but found its true calling in healthcare. In 1968, demonstrating his love for learning and helping others, he earned a College Medical Degree in Respiratory Therapy. He dedicated his subsequent career to working diligently across various hospital departments until his well-earned retirement in 2004. His professional journey reflected an unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others, mirrored by the same care and devotion he showed to his family.

A devoted family man, Willard shared a lifelong partnership with the love of his life, Sallie Wilson, whom he married on September 26, 1954. Their marriage spanned 72 years, a testament to enduring love and companionship. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, filling their lives with joy and pride. Willard is survived by his beloved wife Sallie Joan Blue; his children Pamela Kay (Arther) Martin, Randall James (Soyoung Yu) Blue, Brent Thomas Blue, and Amy Lynn (Brian) Kilpatrick; and his cherished grandchildren Jason Martin, Sarah Marin, Austin Agnew, and Kevin Agnew. His legacy of love continues through his great-grandchildren Iris and Rex. Additionally, Willard counted his nephew Bobby White among his close family, as well as numerous other loving relatives and dear friends who held him in their hearts.

His heart also carries a gentle sorrow for those who preceded him in death: his parents, Edward Blue and Martha Ann Stephens; his sister, Peggy Ann White; his brother, Tusco Blue; and his granddaughter, Renee Atchison. Their memories remain a cherished inheritance in the tapestry of his life.

Willard found solace and joy in creative pursuits, which defined another facet of his rich personality. He loved playing the harmonica, creating delicate pin and ink drawings, and painting oil portraits of scenic wilderness landscapes, inspired by the serene artistry of Bob Ross. These artistic expressions were more than hobbies; they were extensions of his soul's thirst for beauty and tranquility. He also was a member of the Marine Corp League of Clearmont County where he served as flag bearer.

Those who knew Willard remember him as a man who was proud—not just of his own achievements, but above all, of his children and grandchildren and all they accomplished. His pride in his family was a source of immense joy. He devoted his life to being a pillar of strength and kindness, a constant presence who embraced learning and extended help selflessly.
