Virgil O. Miller, affectionately known to many as "Papaw," passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, in Fairborn, Ohio, on what would have been his 62nd wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Janice. Born on August 19, 1941, in Frenchburg, Kentucky, Virgil lived a life rich with warmth, friendship, and steadfast dedication to those he held dear.
A proud graduate of the Patterson Co Op Class of 1960, Virgil was a man whose outgoing personality left a lasting imprint on everyone he met. He was truly one of those rare individuals who never met a stranger; his friendly demeanor and genuine happiness were a beacon of comfort and joy, making everyone feel like family. He loved to be “everyone’s Papaw,” a role he fulfilled with heartfelt sincerity, cultivating friendships that spanned decades and distances.
Virgil’s service to his country stands as a testament to his courage and commitment. As a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he embraced the call to serve with honor, a chapter in his life that defined his sense of duty and perseverance.
Following his military service, Virgil dedicated more than 30 years to General Motors, where he worked with pride until his retirement. His career was marked not only by professionalism but also by the friendships and respect he earned along the way.
Beyond his work, Virgil’s passions reflected his vibrant spirit. A devoted member of the Way of the Cross Church, his faith was a guiding light throughout his journey. He was an avid fan of drag racing—a thrilling world that matched his zest for life— and took great pride in his beautifully restored 1987 Buick Regal Limited, a symbol of his craftsmanship and love of classic cars.
Virgil’s family was the heart of his existence. He is survived by his daughter, Carla Ross (Shawn Stamper); his beloved granddaughter, Brooke Ross (Dale Jenkins); sister, Rella Robinson; nephew, Scott Robinson; niece, Christena Hakanson (Chet); and great-nephews Preston and Garrett. Alongside these cherished family members, countless others who called him friend mourn the loss of a man who truly embodied kindness and joy.
Virgil was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mitchell and Christena Miller; his devoted wife, Janice Miller; his daughter, Paula Miller; and brothers, Vearl and Doyle Miller. Though they are no longer with us, they remain forever in the tapestry of his life and legacy.
“Papaw” Miller’s passing leaves a void felt deeply by all who knew him. Yet, the light of his spirit shines brightly in the hearts he touched, the memories he created, and the love he shared so freely. His story is one of friendship, loyalty, and unwavering happiness—a legacy that will continue to inspire and comfort for generations to come.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road. To share a memory of Virgil or to leave his family a special message, please sign the online guestbook provided.
