Vernil Lee Watkins, known affectionately to many as Vern, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, in Fairborn, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 14, 1939, in Garrett, Kentucky, Vern’s journey was marked by unwavering dedication, heartfelt generosity, and a deep love for life.
From an early age, Vern demonstrated a robust work ethic that carried through his entire life. He devoted himself to his craft with unmatched passion, working as a self-employed carpenter and mastering woodworking, a hobby that brought him immense joy alongside fishing and crafting. Vern's talent and devotion to his trade reflected the care and precision he extended to every aspect of his life.
Before embracing a career in carpentry, Vern served honorably in the United States Navy, where he earned a Good Conduct Medal, a testament to his integrity and discipline. After his military service, he continued to build not only his career but a remarkable legacy grounded in family and friendship. Vern attended Fairborn High School, laying the foundation for a life steeped in community and steadfast commitment.
Known for his ornery yet endearing personality, Vern was both funny and caring. He had a rare gift for making anyone he met feel welcome — truly never meeting a stranger. His generosity and giving spirit were felt by all who knew him, whether through his woodwork or the warmth he shared so freely. Above all, Vern was proud of his family, holding a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, whom he cherished deeply.
Vern’s family includes his beloved children, Shelia (Daryl) Poplin, Shirley (Clark) Ray, and Deanna (Rodney) Meadows, who carry forward his legacy with love and respect. He was the proud grandfather to Donna, Cathy, Sara, April, Jessica, Corrina, Jeffrey, Serena, Randall, Benjamin, Christina, Michael, Emily, Kasey, and Matt. His family circle extends to a cherished sister, Beatrice Diffendal, and the joy of watching multiple great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren flourish in the warmth of his memory.
He is mourned alongside the memories of his beloved wife Beverly; daughters Virginia Hazelwood and Mary Lynch; parents Daily Watkins and Virgie Watkins Jarrell; grandson Gregory; and siblings Everett Watkins, Bruce Watkins, Rader Watkins, Adrian Watkins, Bernice Wilson, and Glenna Molina, whose spirits remain intertwined with his own.
