Velma Ruth Sims, affectionately known as Ruth, was born on August 11, 1944, in Huntsville, Alabama. With a heart full of love and an unwavering spirit, Ruth peacefully departed this life on February 5, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and cherished memories at the age of 81.
Ruth's journey began in the halls of Dunbar High School, where she learned the values of hard work and determination that would guide her throughout her life. A gifted cook, she found joy in preparing meals that not only nourished the body but brought people together, creating a warmth and sense of belonging around the dinner table. Her culinary talents were matched only by her profound love for her family and community.
A devoted Jehovah’s Witness, Ruth’s faith was a cornerstone of her life, illuminating every step she took. Whether engaged in worship, cooking for her loved ones, or simply sharing moments of laughter with family, her spirit radiated kindness and tenderness.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carnell Sims, and by her adored parents, Lucille Burt and Vilma Clay. The loss of her siblings—Georgia Johnson, Major Miller, Crowley Miller, and Dorothy Reed—left an indelible mark on her heart, yet she carried their memories with her always, guiding her in love and faith.
She leaves behind a large and loving family who will forever cherish her memory. Her children include Sharon Clay; Karen Moss, who is accompanied by her special son-in-law, Kenneth Moss; Carnell Sims and Lucrecy Sims; Catina Washington and Clyde Washington; Gus Sims; Diane Sims; Latoya Sims; and Jennifer Allen, special daughter of love. Ruth also is survived by her dear sisters, Evelyn Perwitt and Shirley Walker; her brother, Charles Clay; and special niece, Kathy Johnson. Her legacy blossoms further with 22 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who carry forth her spirit of love.
As we gather to remember Ruth, let us celebrate a life lived with purpose, compassion, and joy. She taught us the importance of family, the power of faith, and the comfort of sharing meals together. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all whose lives she touched.
