With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Tom Melton, a man whose heart shone as brightly as his indomitable spirit. Born on November 30, 1965, in Middletown, Ohio, Tom's journey came to a close on May 6, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. We mourn the loss of a man who was quite the jokester, a little bit onery, yet possessed a huge heart and an unwavering devotion to helping others.
Tom was much more than a man; he was a guiding light and a healer of hearts. As the founding pastor and pastor Emeritus of Set Free Church - The Church in Your Mail, he devoted his life to restoring broken people, embodying the love of God in every step he took. His passion for people and faith was infectious, touching lives in ways words often fail to express. His hands, skilled and steady, owned and operated his own plumbing business. Tom could fix problems with his technicians without even seeing the issues—proof of his deep expertise and calm confidence. Earlier in life, he served as a volunteer firefighter, a testament to his selflessness. He also carried a love for the thrill of drag racing and cherished the companionship of his cats. His skill and reputation extended to governmental contracts, where his expertise was valued and trusted.
Tom is lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth Melton, who stood as his partner through life's many chapters. He is survived by his children, each a testament to his legacy: Keith Melton (Emily), Joseph McIntosh (Leah), Tony Emrick (Kala), John Melton (Ashley), Jasmine Applegate (Chris), and Noah Melton; grandchildren, bright stars of his life, include Hunter Melton, Riley Sullivan, Zachariah Melton, Aubrey Sullivan, Jonah McIntosh, Tanner McIntosh, Abby McIntosh, Bentley Emrick, Ava Emrick, Hunter Love, Thomas Carney, Isabella Bolton, Archer Yadloski, and Leia Applegate; sister, Cindy Vogt (with Michael); father-in-law, Steve Harmon; mother-in-law, Landa Gale Harmon, along with a host of other family, chosen family, and friends, hold his memory close.
We also remember the father and mother he has left behind in spirit: Alton Ray Melton and Elizabeth Jean Melton, whose love shaped the foundation of the man Tom became.
A visitation to honor Tom’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH 45424, where the funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM.
Tom was a man who walked the earth with a mix of humor and grit, kindness and strength, a heart that beat not just for himself but for every soul he encountered. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy—the love he sowed, the souls he restored and the lives he touched—will endure eternally in the hearts of those blessed to have known him. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and forever loved.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Set Free Church.
