Thomas M. McManus, born July 8, 1943, in Teaneck, New Jersey, passed away on July 6, 2026, in Kettering, Ohio. His life was marked by a deep dedication to his profession, a lifelong love of jazz, and a rich educational and service legacy.
Raised in Hackensack, New Jersey, Thomas embarked early on a path defined by learning and service. After graduating from Upsala College in 1974, he pursued further education with distinction, earning his MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1976. Continuing his commitment to personal and professional growth, Thomas received a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) from San Diego State University in 1996.
From 1964 to 1967, Thomas honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. This period instilled in him a greater sense of duty and laid the groundwork for subsequent public and private sector contributions.
His professional journey was dynamic and impactful. He served as a distribution analyst with CPC International in New Jersey for over 15 years, applying his analytical skills in a vital industry. Later, he transitioned to a role as a research analyst with the Dreyfus Corporation in New York City, where he contributed his expertise for eight years. A new chapter began in December 1986, when Thomas relocated to San Diego, where he resided for 23 years. During his time there, he was a valued member of the teams at the Naval Hospital and the Tricare Regional Office-West (TROW), remaining in these positions until his retirement.
Beyond his professional life, Thomas was passionate about jazz and radio broadcasting. He gave generously of his time as a volunteer DJ at KSDS-FM, the San Diego City College radio station, sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with listeners for many years. Upon relocating to Ohio, he became a volunteer jazz DJ on WDPS in Dayton. His unwavering support and involvement with jazz organizations reflected his commitment to celebrating and preserving the music that brought him so much joy.
Thomas will be fondly remembered by his surviving family, including his brother, Jim McManus; his nephews, Dan (Mathew Kerns) McManus and David (Jill) McManus; and his nieces, Samantha, Emily, and Madelyn McManus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Eileen (Bollerman) McManus.
Those who knew Thomas recall a man of integrity, intellectual curiosity, and deep-rooted passions. His legacy endures in the many lives he touched through his work, his service, and his unwavering dedication to both family and the arts.
