Listen to Obituary

Thomas Vincent Brady Jr., of Toledo, Ohio, was born on September 3, 1941, and died on October 21, 2026.

Tom lived a life marked by intelligence, humility, kindness, and quiet generosity. He was gentle by nature and took care of the people around him in ways both large and small. He showed by example how to treat others, how to love them, and how to care for them well. Those who knew him will remember a man who was always thinking of someone else.

He graduated from St. Francis High School in Toledo and went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toledo. While there, he also excelled in tennis, a sport that remained one of the great joys of his life.

Tom built a remarkable career in engineering and technology. He retired from NCR after 30 years of employment, where he was the pioneer engineer who led the initial project to create the first retail barcode scanning system. He then worked for another 15 years for Uniform Code Counsel, now called GS1, where he was in charge of the global printing standards for the UPC code. Though his work helped shape modern retail technology, he never made his career the center of his life.

What mattered most to Tom was his family. His proudest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. He was his children’s and grandchildren’s number one fan. He coached his son in baseball and showed up faithfully for every event —football games, volleyball games, bowling matches, karate testing, dance recitals, lacrosse games, and so many other moments that mattered. He was always proud, always present, and always cheering them on.

He will also be remembered for the deep love and devotion he had for his wife, Trish. He cared for her tenderly and never saw her as anything other than perfect. Together they enjoyed vacationing in the Bradenton, Florida and spending time with their brothers and sisters. Their life together was a picture of companionship, loyalty, and love.

Tom enjoyed many simple pleasures. He loved playing tennis, fishing, gardening, being outdoors, and taking care of his yard. He was also an avid fan of Alter High School, St. X Bombers, the Miami RedHawks, The Ohio State Buckeyes, SUA Bulldogs, and the Cleveland Browns. Whether he was on the court, outside in the yard, or following a favorite team, he brought the same steady enthusiasm and warmth that he brought to every part of life.

Tom is survived by his children, Kathleen (Chris) Riegel and Tom (Betsy) Brady; grandchildren, Matthew, AnnMarie, Kate, Nick, and Molly; sisters, Barbara (Richard) Bush and Paticia Mazeika; Beloved Dog, Coco; as well as numerous other family and friends.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia "Trish" Brady.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Newcomer Centerville Chapel (820 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Dayton, OH 45459). Thomas Vincent Brady Jr. leaves behind the example of a life well lived: a brilliant mind joined with a humble heart, a faithful husband, a devoted father and grandfather, and a man whose love was shown in action every day. He will be remembered with deep affection and lasting gratitude.

The grandchildren's favorite memories: Matthew: Being fishing buddies in Florida, AnnMarie: Teaching me how to do everything with my left hand. he taught me how to tie my shoes, golf, and cut fruit, Kate: The way that Papa looked at Granny Trish, he exemplified love for all of us in the way he treated everyone around him and the way he cared for Granny Trish, Nick: The time that I caught 2 snapping turtles in his pond in the same day. And I loved going to play tennis with him, Molly: I loved it when Papa came to my soccer games.
