Suzan Marie Placak, "Suzi" born January 2, 1957, passed away unexpectedly on April 28, 2026, in Kettering, Ohio. She leaves behind a legacy marked by love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those she cherished most.
Suzi spent her career as a bartender, where she became more than just a server of drinks; she was an “amateur psychologist” to her patrons and friends. Always ready with a listening ear and wise advice, she touched many lives with her compassion and understanding. Her stubborn spirit was balanced by an enduring selflessness and a loving heart. She gave everything of herself to those around her without ever asking for anything in return. Those who knew Suzi remember her for her wonderful, if sometimes twisted, sense of humor, and her remarkable ability to find laughter even in the most challenging situations. Strong attachments were a hallmark of her relationships, and she nurtured them with genuine care.
Suzi moved to Washington in her early twenties and made the Pacific Northwest her home for much of her life, though Ohio always remained close to her heart. Her son, Jon Placak, recently found a photograph of her mowing the lawn, cigarette in hand, steadily working away. He remarked, “This sums up my Mom.” Jon fondly recalls the amazing deviled eggs she made and the countless road trips that often turned into adventures after they got lost, each journey filled with fun and togetherness.
A devoted animal lover, Suzi’s life was filled with the companionship of many pets who, as she would say, “adopted” her rather than the other way around. Her home blossomed with plants, transforming into what many described as a botanical garden, reflecting her deep affection for nature. An avid reader in her younger years, she enjoyed delving into the works of Stephen King among others. She also showcased her competitive spirit as a skilled dart player, participating in leagues and state-wide tournaments, where her talent and enthusiasm shone brightly.
Suzi’s family was her greatest pride and joy. She is survived by her son, Jon Placak (Peggy L. Meyers); her sister, Patricia (Russ) Wallen; her step-daughter, Jessica Habowski (Derek), along with Jessica’s children, Chloe, Jocelynn, and Jeremiah. They, along with several extended relatives and many friends, carry forward her memory and the warmth she brought to their lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and G. Gloria Placak, and her husband, Mark Akers.
Suzi's life was a testament to devotion, humor, and strength. Her passing leaves a profound void, but her spirit endures in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
