Susan Annetta Woolum, affectionately known as Nana, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on February 28, 1948, in Louisville, Kentucky, she lived a vibrant life full of love, laughter, and wonderful memories that will forever remain cherished by her family and friends.
Susan was a force of nature. She had a personality that was larger than life—funny, opinionated, and stubborn at times, but her sharp wit and intelligence were admired by all who knew her. As the matriarch of her family, she played a pivotal role in keeping everyone connected through her love for hosting family events. These occasions were filled with her delicious cooking and baking, showcasing the love she poured into every meal. Susan also had a penchant for mystery shows, often found engrossed in episodes of "Murder She Wrote," which reflected her keen intellect and taste for thrilling stories.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gillis Woolum, with whom she shared 44 wonderful years. Susan also leaves behind her three sons, Jason Keith Newman (Carey Brentlinger), Douglas Scott Newman (Martha), and Matthew D. Newman, grandchildren, Caitlin Klosterman (Justin), Nicholas Newman (Danielle), Paige Newman (Travis Minser), Conner Newman, and Kyle Newman, great-grandchildren, Kendall, Carter, and Bennett, sister, Sandra Guill (Chuck), sisters-in-law, Sherry Pesut (Marty) and Kathy Pennington, brother-in-law, Arthur Woolum (Karen), along with many other relatives and friends.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, Harry Harshfield, mother, Annetta Harshfield, brother, Harry Harshfield Jr., sister, Judith Gunnels, and brother-in-law, Gary Pennington. She is also reunited with her beloved dogs, Maggie, Missy, Bentley, Hunter, Pumpkin, Buffy, and Leo.
Susan will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to light up the lives of those who knew her.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 27, 2025 from 1-2pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton, Ohio 45424. A celebration of life will follow at 2pm.
