Listen to Obituary

Sue Ellen Hannan, age 82 of Centerville, passed away on February 18, 2026. Born on October 3, 1943, in Auburn, New York, to Arthur F. Johnson and Mary Elizabeth (Byrnes) Johnson. Sue lived a life dedicated to faith, family, and friends.

Raised in Skaneateles, her beloved hometown in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Sue excelled in athletics during her youth, playing every sport she could, including badminton, basketball, and golf at a time when no formal school programs were available to female athletes. Sue kept a lifelong bond to her hometown, including several cherished lifelong friendships since childhood.

Sue left Skaneateles to attend Kent State University to pursue a degree in Education. While at Kent State, she became a member of the inaugural women’s collegiate golf team for the university. During her freshman year, Sue met Tom, her future husband of 59 years.

Upon graduation, Sue started her career as a program coordinator with the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. Sue was then at home for many years raising her children: Michael, Julie, and Greg. While pursuing her Masters degree at Wright State University, Sue then connected her faith and career as the Library Media Specialist for Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio. Sue further advanced her career as the Assistant Superintendent for Technology for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Schools. Sue finished her career as a Technology Consultant for VarTek in Centerville, Ohio. She had many career accomplishments, including guiding students with college/career searches and integrating technology throughout the Archdiocese.

Sue was known for her generous spirit and strong Catholic faith. She was a devoted member of Saint Paul's Parish in Westerville and Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Centerville. Sue and Tom generously volunteered to their community, including leadership roles in high school CCD, Engagement Encounter, monthly Families group, Eucharistic Ministers for the homebound, and Small Basic Christian Community groups.

For many years, Sue expressed her faith through writing spiritual poems and reflections during travel and along many milestones of life. Sue’s greatest connection to family and friendship was her annual Christmas card. The tradition of over forty years involved a themed-card with a personally written spiritual message sent to over 100 families and friends.

Sue and Tom shared many hobbies together, including golf, winter sports, boating, and travel. Together they spent many days enjoying the family boat at Caesars Creek and skiing across New York and the West. A favorite location for both of them was Lake Tahoe. Travels took them to Ireland, Italy, throughout Europe, and on numerous cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska.

Sue had a strong commitment to her friends and family, maintaining lifelong friendships and organizing many family holidays and vacations. Sue always put effort into family dinners, neighborhood potlucks, making crafts with her grandchildren, and hosting those in need of a personal connection.

Sue leaves behind a loving family, husband Tom, children Michael, Julie, and Greg (Jackie), and grandchildren Matthew, Andrew, Benjamin, Madeline, Emmaline, and Mallory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 6245 Wilmington Pike, Centerville, at 11:00am on February 27, 2026. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to Mass starting at 10:00am. A luncheon at the church will follow the services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton.
