Shirley Ann Poteet, age 84, passed away on May 28, 2026, in Beavercreek, Ohio. Born on January 8, 1942, in Duffield, Virginia, Shirley lived a life marked by warmth, humor, and a zest for living that touched all who knew her.
Shirley retired from a career with General Motors, a testament to her dedication and hard work. Beyond her professional achievements, she was known for her vivacious personality—funny, loving, and possessing a great sense of humor coupled with a beautiful smile and a sassy personality that endeared her to many.
A woman of varied interests, Shirley particularly loved visiting the casino, delighting in the thrill of playing slot machines. Her community involvement was a source of great pride to her; she was a devoted member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 73 in Dayton, the American Legion Post 763, and The Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 321 in Beavercreek.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Jenny Bowles; nephew and niece, Johnny and Kathy; sisters-in-law, Pauline Pursley and Nella Dovel; dear friends, Toni (Greg) Cason, Roy Egan, Debby Tomasic and Juanita Baker; her faithful dog, Chunk; and many other loving friends and family who will deeply miss her.
She was preceded in death by her cherished parents, Suthers and Irene Bowen, her beloved husband, Charlie "Gene" Poteet, her son Gary Poteet, grandsons, Bradley and Robert Poteet; and her sister Barbara Sue.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation to honor Shirley’s memory on Sunday, June 14, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at Newcomer Funeral Home in Beavercreek, Ohio, located at 3380 Dayton Xenia Rd. This will be followed by a funeral service at the same location beginning at 3:00 PM. A graveside service will take place the following day, Monday, June 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at Heritage Hills Memory Gardens, 7370 OH-48, Springboro, Ohio.
Shirley Ann Poteet’s passing leaves a void that will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege to know her. Her wit, warmth, and indomitable spirit remain a lasting legacy, a beacon of light and love for generations to come. May she rest in peace.
