Shirley A. James

Shirley A. James, a beloved member of her community, passed away on November 7, 2025, at the age of 81 in West Carrollton, Ohio. Born on September 18, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio, Shirley's early education took place in Farmersville, Ohio, where she attended both elementary and high school.

Shirley dedicated many years of her life to her career at Monsanto before retiring to focus on her passions and charitable endeavors. Known for her warm sense of humor and generous spirit, Shirley was always willing to lend a helping hand. Her commitment to charity work was immense; she offered her time and resources selflessly, housing veterans and even creating a small thrift store stocked with free items to assist those in need. Her efforts did not go unnoticed, as she was honored with the Appalachian Dutch award and the Dayton Humanitarian award for her contributions to the community. Moreover, she served as a Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leader, guiding three different levels of troops through their formative years.

In her spare time, Shirley cherished her hobbies, particularly crafts, and had a deep love for animals. She made it her mission to ensure the stray cats in her neighborhood were spayed and neutered, reflecting her compassionate nature.

Shirley faced health challenges with strength and resilience, having survived a liver transplant that gave her an additional 30 years of life. She is lovingly remembered by her family, which includes her daughters, Debbie Perkins and Connie James, and her grandson, Randen (Christina), whom she raised and considered as her son. She also leaves behind grandchildren Ricky Bush (Angie), James Schmelzer, Amber Baker, Dalton Thompson (Abigail), Dustin Thompson (Jessica), Destiny (Perris) Blair, Christopher Bush, Dominique James (Tommy), along with 31 great-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by her brother, James Erisman, and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends who were touched by her kindness.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Dorothy Erisman; daughter, Rayann Schmelzer; two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Jocelyn Blair, and siblings Martha Eby, Helen Dawson, Luella Baker, and Herbert Erisman. Her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to helping others will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
