Listen to Obituary

Sammy Madewell, a devoted family man, a kind soul, and a faithful servant of his country, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on March 11, 1939, in Wilder, Tennessee, Sammy’s journey through life was marked by warmth, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

A proud veteran, Sammy served honorably in the United States Navy for four years, a chapter of his life that stood as one of his proudest accomplishments, even earning the Good Conduct Medal during his service. His dedication extended far beyond his military service; he was a man who truly embodied kindness and selflessness in every area of his life. Known for never uttering a bad word about anyone, Sammy was always ready to lend a hand and help others in need. His affection for animals was evident in the gentle way he cared for squirrels and birds, feeding them with tenderness during his many walks outdoors. These walks were more than a pastime—they were precious moments spent enjoying nature’s beauty and creating cherished memories, especially when joined by his grandchildren for spirited games of checkers.

Sammy's faith was the most important aspect of his life. He was a devoted Christian and faithfully followed Jesus as his Lord and Savior. A long time member of the Church of Christ, he was an example to his family of what a God following man should be.

In his free time, he loved to work on lawn mowers. He would repair and refinish them and then sell them to his friends, family, and community.

Family was the cornerstone of Sammy’s life. He was deeply devoted to his loved ones and took immense joy in showering his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with sweets and ice cream, creating moments of joy that will be fondly remembered by all. Sammy’s sons, Doug Arwood (Linda) and Tim Arwood (Dreama Spiller) , along with his grandchildren Ashley Curtner, Lindsay Bennett, TJ Arwood (and Ali), Aaron Arwood (and Trisha), and his beloved great-grandchildren Jackson, Aiden, Aubrey, Clayton, Carter, Avaleigh, Everett, Emma, Scarlet, Amelia, Rosie, Elizabeth, and Noah—all carry the legacy of his love and kindness forward. He is also remembered warmly by many other relatives and friends who were touched by his generous spirit.

Sammy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beulah Madewell; his parents, CV and Laura Madewell; and his siblings Emogene, Lee, Charles, Anna Faye, and David.

Visitation will be held on March 28, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Dayton, located at 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH 45424. Following the visitation, a funeral service honoring Sammy’s life will begin at 2:00 PM and include Naval Honors being rendered during the service.

Sammy Madewill left this world as he lived in it—with grace, generosity, and an open heart. His legacy is not only found in the stories he shared or the pastimes he enjoyed, but most importantly, in the countless lives he touched. He will be profoundly missed but forever treasured. May his spirit find peace among the gentle whispers of the trees and the sweet songs of the birds he so dearly loved.
