Ruth E. McAvoy, a beloved matriarch and dedicated public servant, passed away on June 9, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 88. Born on March 18, 1937, in Ottawa, Ohio, Ruth's life was defined by her unwavering commitment to her family and her career.
Ruth dedicated 31 years of her life as a secretary for the Dayton Police Department, where her diligence and professionalism earned her the respect of colleagues and community members alike. Her career was more than a job; it was a testament to her steadfast character and determination.
Known for her ornery yet endearing personality, Ruth had a unique ability to inject humor into every situation. Her penchant for sarcasm and the occasional playful jab endeared her to many, while her stubbornness was a testament to her strength and resolve. Ruth cultivated an environment of love and laughter among her family and friends, who appreciated her quick wit and infectious spirit.
Ruth cherished her family above all else. She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Kristina Fisher, Daniel Wells, and Patrick Taber, and a great-grandmother to Lauren Fisher and Nora Taber. Her grandchildren brought her immeasurable joy, and she delighted in creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Ruth found joy in making crafts. She was a passionate reader and enjoyed relaxing with her favorite reality TV shows. Travel held a special place in her heart, and she embraced adventures near and far. An enthusiastic flower gardener, Ruth found solace in her garden. A sweet tooth led her to indulge in pastries, a guilty pleasure she particularly loved.
Ruth's legacy will live on through her close-knit family, which includes her sisters Anna Marie Schwieterman, Doris Willert, Judy Drummer, Sue Grayson, and Paula Potterf; and numerous nieces and nephews who will undoubtedly carry her spirit forward.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Harry McAvoy, her daughter Debra Taber, her parents Gordon and Civilla Drummer, and her brothers John and Eugene Drummer, as well as her sister Barbara Nickloy. Each of these individuals left an indelible mark on her life, shaping the remarkable woman she became.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday June 17th, 2025 from 12-1pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton, Ohio 45424. The service will follow at 1pm. Ruth will be laid to rest at David's Cemetery.
