Robert "Gene" E. Walls

Robert "Gene" Eugene Walls, known simply as Gene, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Born June 1, 1938, in Richmond, Indiana, Gene was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, remembered for his sense of humor, steadfast character, and enduring devotion to family.

Gene was the cherished son of William and Clara Walls, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in Richmond, Indiana, where the roots of his strong will and jovial spirit were first laid.

Throughout his life, Gene built a legacy of diligence and dedication. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, instilling in him values he carried forward into every endeavor. His professional journey led him to Heapy Engineering, where he retired after serving as Mechanical Designer and Team Manager, roles through which he formed lasting connections and garnered respect from colleagues.

Outside of his career, Gene found fulfillment in service and community involvement. As a past Potentate of the Antioch Shrine and a 33rd degree Mason, Gene demonstrated unwavering commitment to the Antioch Shrine and Masonic fraternities and their principles. He further extended his giving spirit by serving on the board of the Lexington Shriner's Children Hospital, where his efforts impacted the lives of countless children and families.

Those who knew Gene best will always remember his unique blend of stubbornness and orneriness, qualities softened by an infectious sense of humor and an ever-present twinkle in his eye. Nicknamed "Cheap Gene," he wore the title with pride, often turning thriftiness into a family joke and a badge of honor. His greatest joy, however, was spending time surrounded by loved ones—a source of happiness that defined him.

Gene's devotion to his late wife, Marcia Walls, was unwavering and beautifully clear to all who knew them. His family meant everything to him, and this love was evident in each interaction, every shared laugh, and gentle word.

He leaves behind a loving legacy through his surviving family: his son, Kent (Schelly) Walls, and daughter, Tara (Michael) Gilmartin; his grandchildren, Corey (Ashley) Walls, Sean (Meaghan) Walls, Rachelle Walls, and Mikaela (Brian) Kennedy; and his great-grandsons, Greyson Walls and Maddon Walls. He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Angie Marshall, and his sister, Eleanora Greenfelder.

Gene’s interests were as varied as his stories. He enjoyed collecting eagle figurines, proudly displaying them as symbols of grace and independence, and delighted most in gatherings with family and friends.

Gene’s life was marked by service, laughter, and enduring love. The many people privileged to know him will carry forward treasured memories of his wit, generosity, and spirited presence. His memory will remain a guiding light for all who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations to Friends Care Community and/or Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. 

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at David's Cemetery, 4600 Mad River Rd in Dayton.
