Rita Beatrice Bowling, born on October 22, 1950, in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, passed away on February 9, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. Rita's spirit, defined by an unmistakable spunk and sass, left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Beneath her tough exterior lay a heart of gold, a caring soul who adored her family fiercely and without reservation.
As a devoted mother, Rita cherished her loving children: Tanya (Rob) Fleming and Jonathan Short. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, who were the light of her life—Kaila (Josh) Ritter, Walker (Jessika) Fleming, Brenley Short, Breanna Fleming, Coleton Fleming, and Nichole Short. She rejoiced in the joy of great-grandchildren, Wyland, Grady, and Huxon, whom she looked forward to seeing grow and loved unconditionally.
Rita shared countless beautiful moments with her siblings, each memory woven into the fabric of her life. She is survived by her beloved sisters and brothers: Wanda (Jimmy) Larson, David (Carrie) Owens, Lance Paul, Kim (Scott) Mikles, Sierra (Dustin) Cox, and Regina Owens; ; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her special friend Dot was also by her side, forming a friendship filled with cherished memories and laughter.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, John Owens and Lissie Paul, and her step-father, whom she held dear and thought of as a father, Dave Paul. She also mourned the loss of her sister, Debra Parsons, and her niece, Ashley Owens. The love of her life, Rex Short, also departed before her, leaving behind a profound void in her heart.
In her downtime, Rita found joy in simple pleasures, often sitting in the sun with a good book and a sweet treat in hand. Her outspoken nature and caring spirit touched the hearts of many.
Rita's family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her life during a Visitation on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, all held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek, Ohio.
