Richard Thane Hyden, age 73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at approximately 1:12 p.m., surrounded by the love and presence of his family.
Born in Seymour, Indiana, on January 18, 1952, Richard’s early years were rooted in small-town values and a strong sense of family. His family relocated to Ohio when he was in the 5th grade, eventually settling in New Carlisle, where he graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1970.
In October of 1971, Richard enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly beginning his lifelong journey of military service. While home for the holidays later that year, he became engaged to the love of his life, Rhonda. The two were married on May 5, 1973, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span more than five decades.
In 1976, Richard and Rhonda moved their young family to Virginia, where he worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock as a welder in the crow’s nest—an intense and physically demanding position that showcased his work ethic and grit. By 1978, they were the proud parents of two children: Jeramy and Amanda.Richard continued his service by enlisting in the Ohio Air National Guard, where he served with dedication and integrity. His military career included roles in personnel and later as the Base Services Manager, where he oversaw the dining hall and support services for the base. For 15 years, he led with compassion and unwavering commitment, ensuring that those who served were cared for. After 29 years of honorable service to his beloved country, Richard retired with pride.
Richard’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a loving husband, a proud and supportive father, and a devoted grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda; his son, Jeramy; and his daughter, Amanda. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren Whitney, Jordan, and Jacob, and his great-granddaughters Aundraya and Kendall.
Those who knew Richard will remember him for his quiet strength, his steady presence, and his deep devotion to the people he loved. He served his family, his country, and his community with humility and honor—and in doing so, left behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
