Richard Allen Nelson, a cherished member of the Dayton community, was born on January 30, 1944, and passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his life, Richard exemplified kindness, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting those around him.

A proud graduate of the University of Dayton, Richard earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education and devoted a significant portion of his career to shaping young minds. He worked as an art teacher for Kettering City Schools from January 1966 until December 1973, a role that allowed him to share his passion for creativity and artistic expression with countless students. In his personal life, Richard found joy in the simple moments, often reminiscing about watching old movies on Saturday afternoons with his family. He had a love for cooking, frequently preparing meals for his loved ones using treasured recipes passed down from his mother. His hobbies extended beyond the kitchen; he took great pleasure in restoring antiques and creating artwork, alongside his fondness for reading. A generous spirit, Richard made significant contributions to many charities, reflecting his desire to make a positive impact in his community.

Richard's proudest accomplishments were centered around his family. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Melinda (Jeff) VanVlymen; his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas, Abigail, and Thomas VanVlymen; his sister, Betty Free; and his best friend, Tonya Tinch. Richard was predeceased by his parents, William and Teresa Nelson; his brother, Bill Nelson; and his partner, Richard Ferrymen.
