Richard Franklin Dreher, Lt. Col.

October 23, 1936 — May 31, 2025

Riverside, Ohio

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Franklin Dreher, Lt. Col. (retired), affectionately known as Rick, who departed this life on May 31, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, peacefully surrounded by family. Born on October 23, 1936, in Derby, Connecticut, Rick lived a life marked by dedication, love, and integrity.

After completing his education at Ansonia High School in 1954, he furthered his studies at the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1958, followed by a Master's Degree in Computer Science from Texas A&M. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a remarkable career, which began with his service in the United States Air Force, where he retired in May 1985 as Lt. Col. As a management analyst staff officer in the Logistics Management Systems Center at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Rick's tenure allowed him to experience life in Tokyo and travel extensively to Korea, Okinawa, and Guam.

Following his military career, Rick's professional journey continued as an Enrolled Agent for the IRS, and he dedicated 17 years to H&R Block Executive Tax Service. Rick's passion for service extended beyond his career; he was known for his unwavering honesty, passionate spirit, and honorable demeanor, earning him the reputation as the best man his family knew.

Rick poured his heart into family, serving as a devoted husband to Elaine, his love for 66 years, and as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He created cherished memories through family trips to the Air Force Museum with his grandchildren and enjoyed teaching them about history through visits to monuments and museums. Rick's adventurous spirit was evident in his hobbies, which included racquetball, handball, and softball, as well as taking Reba, his beloved dog, on evening walks. He also embraced genealogy and seized opportunities for travelling to new places, tent camping, and fishing.

Rick is survived by his wife Elaine, daughter Susan Howard, daughter-in-law Cindy (Terry) Armstrong, grandchildren Steven Dreher Jr., Jessica (Jon) Sefic, Destinee (Eddie) Wells, Terra (Brad) DeBarr, and Joshua Howard, along with his cherished great-grandchildren: Daniel, Kylie, Vincent, Emma, Mylee, Jase, Josh, Jenna, Hadley, Dawson, Raegan, Asheton, and Braxton. Rick also leaves behind his sister Marlene Whaples.

He rejoins his deceased family members, including his parents John and Johanna Dreher, his son Steven R. Dreher Sr., and his brother John (Barbara) Dreher. These individuals shaped his life and will be fondly remembered.

A visitation honoring Rick will take place on June 17, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at Newcomer Funeral Home in Beavercreek, Ohio. A funeral service will follow on June 18, 2025, at 11:30 AM, at the same location. He will be laid to rest at Dayton National Cemetery with full military honors.
