Richard N. Cunningham, age 74 of Dayton, OH passed away at his home in the historic district of St. Ann's Hill on Saturday, June 29, 2019. He was born February 9, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio to Robert and Mary (McCord) Cunningham. Richard married James R. Barba on July 29, 2015.
Rick studied print making and photography at the Dayton Art Institute for four years and continued his education at Ohio University. He worked in photography for Malone Photography and was an art collector. Rick started two businesses, Zeitguys Network and Phoenix Enterprises with Jim, buying and reselling art and architectural antiques. He worked 20 years as a supervisor at the Burkhardt branch of the Dayton Public Library and retired in 2009. Rick enjoyed train travel, taking the Amtrak with Jim from Chicago to the West Coast, enjoying the scenery along the way.
Rick and Jim were married by Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley after the SCOTUS ruling in 2015. Prior to their marriage, Rick and Jim were domestic partners for 50 years.
A special thanks goes out to Lizabeth, Rick's longtime caregiver, who he had a special fondness for.
Richard is survived by his husband, Jim; longtime friend, Michael Sullivan of New Orleans; and former coworkers and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions can be made in Richard's name to Human Right's Commission HRC, GLAAD, the ACLU or the Dayton Metro Library.
At Rick's request of the family, no services will be conducted for Rick.
