With hearts full of gratitude for a life beautifully lived and faithfully served, we celebrate the life and legacy of Reverend Doctor John Wesley Gakwaya, who has entered into eternal rest. A devoted servant of God, esteemed leader, and beloved husband and father, Reverend Gakwaya’s life was a radiant testament to faith, purpose, and enduring love.
Born on December 22, 1948, in Kibogora, Rwanda, John was raised in a loving, God-fearing home. He accepted Christ at an early age and began a life dedicated to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He founded the Kigali Free Methodist Church in 1975, along with an elementary and high school, both still operate today. He served as a teacher, pastor, and Superintendent in the Free Methodist Church in Rwanda.
In 1992, he matriculated at Kentucky Mountain Bible College, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 2001, John earned his doctorate in Ministry. He led many congregations, lovingly known as ‘Pastor John.’ In 2001, Pastor John founded and led the Dayton Compassion Church (DCC) in Huber Heights, OH, which supports East African refugees with resettlement needs and connects them to other community members. This July would have been the Jubilee year, the 25th year of service.
John and Vilginie married in 1981. To their union, were born four children: Timothy, Theophile, Grace, and Johnathan.
Reverend Gakwaya answered his divine calling with unwavering commitment, dedicating his life to ministry, mentorship, and the uplift of all whom he encountered. His preaching stirred souls, his leadership strengthened communities, and his compassion extended far beyond the pulpit. He carried himself with humility and grace, leaving an indelible imprint on the hearts of those privileged to know him.
Above all, Reverend Gakwaya was a devoted husband, father, and cherished family member. His love, strength, and presence were a source of comfort and inspiration, forming a foundation that will continue to uplift his family for generations to come. Though he has transitioned from this earthly life, Reverend Gakwaya’s legacy shines brightly, echoing in every life he touched and every soul he inspired. Well done, good and faithful servant.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted and loving wife Vilginie; Brother Pastor Pierre; Brother Leonard and Sister Beata; Children: Timothy (Angela), Theophile, Grace (Joel), and Johnathan (Faamanu); Grandchildren: Giselle, Amarah, Naomi, Kingston, and Kadence; a host of dear friends and devoted congregations throughout the world.
His life was a blessing; his memory a treasure.
He is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
