Rebecca Ann Smitley, 74, passed away peacefully with her daughter at her side, on January 9th, 2026. Born on April 26, 1951, in Zanesville, Ohio, she lived a life marked by resilience, creativity, and compassion.

Rebecca began her professional journey as an Ohio Bell phone operator before transitioning to a career in drafting, first at Continental/Time Warner cable and later at other related companies. Her work reflected her sharp mind and attention to detail, qualities that also shone through in her artistic pursuits.

A gifted artist, Rebecca found joy and expression through drawing, painting, sculpting and creating murals. Her love for art was more than a hobby, it reflected her vibrant spirit and the way she saw beauty in the world around her. She enjoyed nature, animals, music and movies, often sharing these passions with those close to her. Online bingo with friends became her most recent cherished pastime bringing laughter and connection into her daily life. She woke every morning excited to feed the squirrels, watch the birds, and absorb nature from her front window.

Rebecca’s faith was an important part of her life. As a Christian, she carried herself with kindness, gratitude and grace. She offered compliments freely and her warmth made everyone feel welcome. She was fiercely protective of her children and deeply loving towards those around her, she built strong bonds not only with relatives but many friends near and far over the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Heather Cantrell (Brian); grandchildren Christian Tallet (Alison), Jordan Tallet (Katelyn), Aiden Tallet, and Baylee Cantrell; brother Mike Smitley (Sandy). She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, George and Ruth Smitley, and her cherished daughter, Jessica Keen.

Above all, Rebecca was a survivor. She faced personal tragedy with immense courage, transforming her experience into a way to help others. Through personal connections and public speaking, she shared her powerful story to honor her daughter's memory, raise awareness about violence prevention, and support those facing hardship. Her strength was an inspiration to many.
