Raymond E. Schirmer, known affectionately to many as Ray, passed away on April 2, 2026, in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Born on February 24, 1942, in Dayton, Ray lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and a profound love for his family and friends.
Ray devoted 15 years of his professional career as the Head of the Maintenance Department at Centerville High School. In this role, he earned widespread respect and numerous awards, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by colleagues and students alike. His expertise and commitment ensured that the school environment remained safe and welcoming, enabling generations of students to thrive.
Known for his warm humor and friendly nature, Ray was a kind-hearted individual who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was particularly dedicated to his family and those he loved, cherishing every moment shared with his grandchildren. Ray’s passion for carpentry projects and fixing things around his house showcased not only his skill but also his patient and meticulous spirit. As a member of the Case XX Knives Collectors Club, he engaged with a community that shared his enthusiasm for craftsmanship and tradition.
Ray leaves behind a loving family who will hold his memory close. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Ann Schirmer, who stood by his side through life’s journey with unwavering support. His grandsons, Jason Ray (Shaunda) Schirmer and Tre Anthony Schirmer, carry forward his legacy. Ray’s great-granddaughters, Kyla Schirmer and Amanda Schirmer; and his step-grandson, Fred White; along with step-great grandchildren, Riley and Wesley, also remember him with great affection. His sister, Rethetta Wax, and her husband, Bill, remain part of his immediate family circle.
The Schirmer family mourns also the passing of Ray’s son, Anthony Bryan Schirmer; as well as his step-granddaughter, Amanda White; and siblings, Howard Schirmer, Jimmy Schirmer, Jeweleen Gunder, and Stanley Schirmer. His parents, Howard and Retha Schirmer, also passed on before him.
Raymond E. Schirmer’s life was a testament to dedication—to his craft, his family, and his community. His kindness, humor, and generous spirit enriched all who knew him. He will be remembered with great respect, admiration, and love by those whose lives he touched.
