Phill Colwell, a beloved figure known for his vibrant personality and indelible humor, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 12, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. A native of Newfound, Kentucky, Phill was born on May 19, 1947. He dedicated many years of his life to his work at Dayton Press McCalls and Buckeye Boiler, contributing not only to the companies but also making lasting friendships along the way.
Phill was a character who brightened every room he entered. With a talent for storytelling, he often amused friends and family with playful jokes about his daily activities, claiming to be roofing or feeding camels when he was merely relaxing on the couch. Those who knew him remember him as the life of the party, often adorning him with a motorcycle helmet to prevent any accidental mishaps during his spirited antics. His ability to connect with others was exceptional; there was hardly a person he could not strike up a conversation with, and his lovable, stubborn nature made him truly endearing.
Phill was not only known for his jovial spirit but also for his deep love for his family. He took great joy in collecting eagle trinkets, watching basketball and football games, and indulging in his favorite TV show, Mecum Auto Auction. A true nature enthusiast, he delighted in watching hummingbirds flit about.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis (Harlan) Strine; his son, Keith Colwell; as well as his cherished grandchildren: Amber Colwell, Austin Colwell, Marissa Colwell, Alex (Maggie) Strine, Jordan (Kara) Strine, Cameron (Jalyn) Strine, and Emilee Strine. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Brooklynne, Sophia, Ashton, Halle, and Gwyndolyn, with another great-grandson on the way. His loving sisters, Mayme Hypes and Nellie (Dwight) Pugh, along with his close brother-in-law Earl Ledbetter, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, will also carry his memory forward.
Phill joins his parents, Clayton and Daisy Colwell, as well as Carol Colwell, the mother of his children, and his siblings, Reva Brown, Sarah Ledbetter, Betty Hackney, Gladys Barnes, John Colwell, and Clayton Colwell, Jr., who predeceased him. His legacy will continue to live on through the many lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and steadfast love.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 from 12:30-1:30pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, Ohio 45424. The service will follow at 1:30pm. Phill will be laid to rest at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.
