Paul John Hickey, born on March 11, 1948, in a world where his laughter and stories would bring joy to many, passed away in hospice care on February 28, 2026. A man renowned for his warmth, sense of humor, and infectious jollity, Paul touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A proud member of the very first graduating class of Alter High School in 1966, Paul demonstrated an early passion for football, both as a player and later as a coach. His dedication to the sport carried into his adult life, where he shared his love for coaching football and baseball with countless young athletes. He cherished teaching them not just the fundamentals of the games but also valuable life lessons.

Paul dedicated 33 years of his career to General Motors, ultimately retiring with numerous stories and friendships that he cherished dearly. His time at GM was not just about work; it was a chapter filled with camaraderie that reflected his genuine love for people and storytelling.

As a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara A. Hickey, their bond was a testament to enduring love and partnership. They met in the 5th grade and married after graduating high school. Together, they built a family that flourished, including their sons, Paul William Hickey (dec.), Doug (Jen) Hickey, and Matt (Lisa) Hickey, who carry forward Paul’s legacy of kindness and humor. He adored his grandchildren: Kiley (Blaise) Dilley, 1st Lt. Mae Hickey, Cole Hickey, Sarah Hickey, and Paul Douglas Hickey, as well as his great-grandchildren: Mazzy Carter, Lachlan Dilley, and Ever Dilley. His role as 'Papaw' filled him with immense pride and joy.

Paul was one for the great outdoors, indulging in fishing and hunting whenever possible. He also had a deep love for dogs, having welcomed many four-legged friends into his home over the years. His loving nature extended beyond his family; he was a friend to all and was known for making everyone feel welcome and cared for.

He is survived by his sisters, Susie (Rick) Riggs, Barbie (Gary) Leis, Debbie Hickey, and Pammie (Mitch) Brewer, as well as his step-brother, Tom Ward. Paul’s passing leaves behind a vast network of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Paul now joins his son, Paul William Hickey; his parents, Paul J. Hickey and Patricia Buehner; and his sisters, Beverly Young and Patty Hickey, in eternal rest.

While his physical presence will be missed, his legacy of love, humor, and storytelling will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched. Paul John Hickey was truly a remarkable man whose impact on this world is irreplaceable.
