Orville Eugene "Gene" Cromes, 85, of Dayton, passed away on Monday, May 3, 2021 peacefully at his home surrounded by family. He was born on November 29, 1935 in Bethel Township, OH to the late Orville and Dorothy (Wilhelm) Cromes.
Gene is survived by daughters, Robin Meade and Cynthia Carr; grandchildren, Jonathan (Megan), Amanda (David), Alyshia; great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Kaden, Mekkia, Daniel, Surina, Austin, Bentley "PeeWee"; brother, Burrell Cromes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; brother, Dale Cromes; sisters-in-law, Beverly and Sue Cromes; and son-in-law, Paul Carr.
Gene was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, where he served from 1954-1958. After leaving the Navy he worked with the Miami Conservancy District and was the caretaker for the Taylorsville Dam. Gene was an active member in the Vandalia Church of Christ. He was extremely loved by his family and friends and was greatly known for his love of fishing, hunting, and mushroom hunting skills.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, May 10, 2021 at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd. Dayton OH 45424. Friends and family may visit from 12:30 pm until the time of service. Burial will follow at Poplar Hill Cemetery in Vandalia, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Gene's memory.
