Miriam Caldwell Andrews, affectionately known as "Mimi," passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born on January 30, 1945, in Schenectady, New York, she devoted her life to education, athletics, and community engagement, leaving a lasting legacy on all who knew her.

Miriam graduated from Centerville High School as part of the Class of 1963. She furthered her education at the University of Dayton’s School of Arts & Science, earning a master’s degree in history, Russian, and government. With a career spanning over 30 years, Miriam dedicated herself to teaching at Ankeny Middle School, where her passion for education and commitment to her students was evident. In addition to teaching, she coached softball, volleyball, and track, demonstrating her creative and athletic spirit and fostering teamwork and sportsmanship among her pupils.

Her professional accolades included being selected as second team in the USA Today newspaper for the Outstanding Teacher’s Award, a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication in the classroom. Miriam’s love for travel was another prominent aspect of her life; she visited 47 of the 50 states, enriching her perspective and sharing those experiences with those around her.

Beyond her career, Miriam cultivated varied interests and hobbies. She was an active member of the Dayton Dog Training Club and the University of Dayton Women’s Basketball Association. Her summers were often spent at Lake George in New York, a place she cherished deeply. Additionally, she devoted several years working with the Therapeutic Riding Institute, helping others through her compassionate and thoughtful nature. Known for her musical inclination, kindness, and creativity, Miriam’s personality resonated deeply with her family, friends, and community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Enda Andrews. Miriam is survived by her sister, Justine Andrews; cousins Nancy Andrews, Melody (Roger) Kopa, Sarah Kopa and Julia Kopa; special friends Kris (Kristin) Melanson-Brewer, Kathi Bigler, and Suk Wilson; her beloved dog, Oliver; along with other family and friends who will remember her fondly.

Miriam leaves behind a remarkable legacy of kindness, dedication, and a life richly lived through teaching, travel, and community involvement. Her impact will continue to be felt by all whose lives she touched.

A Celebration of Miriam’s Life will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at Dayton Dog Training Club, 3046 E. River Rd, Moraine OH 45439.
