Michael Duerson "Mike" Rymer, a man whose warm spirit and generous heart touched the lives of so many, passed away peacefully at his home in Dayton, Ohio, on April 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 12, 1957, in Dayton, Mike was truly a beacon of love, laughter, and kindness throughout his 68 years.
Mike carried a deep desire to help anyone in need, always offering a helping hand and a kind word. His magnetic personality made him a big flirt at times, and his love for telling jokes was a source of joy and laughter to all who knew him. Mike’s infectious smile and lively spirit often brought people to the dance floor, where he shone with his love of dance and celebration of life.
Mike was also a very talented woodworker, a craft and passion he cherished deeply. He proudly carried on this special talent learned from his father, Oscar Rymer, who was not only his greatest teacher but also his best friend. This bond was a central part of Mike’s life, and though his parents Oscar and Sara Rymer have passed on, their legacy lives vibrantly in him.
Mike’s heart was vast and very giving. He was the devoted husband of Cathy Rymer, whose partnership brought them years of shared memories and unwavering support. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family. Mike was a proud father to Mandy (Mike) Williams, Ann (Danny) Staup, Susy (Sean) Shumaker, Donna Dillavou, Ruby (Darrell) Carico, and Stuart (Tricia) Dillavou. His love blossomed further with 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren who will carry on his spirit and stories.
He found comfort in his extended family, including his mother-in-law, Rosalyn Dillon, and was always surrounded by dear friends who loved him dearly. His best friend since kindergarten, Bill Alles, as well as treasured friends; Timothy Flemming and Donna Hutton, remained constant pillars in his life’s journey. Additionally, Mike’s “adopted” daughter, Nichol Thomas, held a special place in his heart. Among his closest companions was Junior, his beloved cat, who brought quiet companionship in Mike’s final days. He will also be lovingly remembered by his church family at Shroyer Road Baptist Church.
Though Mike’s physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit has joined those who have gone before him, reuniting in Heaven with his parents, Oscar and Sara Rymer, his infant son, T.J. Rymer; his daughters, Jeannie Bowling and Tina Bunch; and his dear dogs, Puggy and Effie. This reunion reminds us that love transcends even the boundaries of life and death.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m., both to be held at the Woodland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, located at 118 Woodland Avenue, Dayton, Ohio.
Mike's legacy is one of a big heart, a giving soul, and a life beautifully lived in service and joy. He will be profoundly missed but forever cherished in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he so gently touched.
