Huber Heights

Mercedes Castillo De Vera, a devoted Christian and beloved member of her community, passed away on June 4, 2025, in Huber Heights, Ohio, at the age of 83. Born on September 24, 1941, in Mexico City, Mexico, Mercedes led a life characterized by her unwavering faith and deep love for family, friends, and animals.

Throughout her life, Mercedes was a passionate missionary, dedicating many years alongside her husband, Conrado Vera Matus, to serve small towns across Mexico. Her commitment to sharing her faith was evident in her daily outreach; she would joyfully invite neighbors and friends to attend her church, Iglesia Camino del Rey. Mercedes was not only a social butterfly but also an engaging spirit who genuinely cared for the well-being of animals, often seen sneaking treats to them.

Her family remembers her fondly as someone who found joy in spoiling her grandkids, preparing delicious meals, and indulging in her hobbies. Mercedes loved watching the news and cooking shows, always seeking new healthy tips to incorporate into her recipes. In addition to her culinary delights, she devoted time to knitting gifts for her loved ones, ensuring that her creativity was a tangible expression of her affection.

Mercedes cherished the small moments in life, consistently engaging in little exercises to stay active, all in the hope of being present for her beloved family members for as long as possible. Her dedication to her church and its activities made her an essential part of her community, where she built lasting relationships with Pastor Tomas and her church family, in addition to many relatives she held dear in Mexico.

She is survived by her two daughters, Maria & her husband, Rick L. Spence and Belem Vera; her cherished grandchildren, Jonathan Catedral, Rebekah Spence, and Rachael Spence; as well as her great-grand-cat, Boots, and great-grand-dog, Joy.

Mercedes was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Conrado Vera Matus, with whom she shared 25 years of love, as well as her parents, Eulalio Castillo and Maria Alvarez.

Her church family and friends are welcome to visit on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 2:30-3pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton OH 45424. A celebration of life will follow at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to wear colorful clothing in honor of her bright spirit.

The memory of Mercedes Castillo De Vera will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her, remembered for her kindness, her unwavering faith, and her immense love for family and friends.
