Mauricio Juan Garcia, Sr.

Mauricio Garcia, son of Basilio and Zoveida Garcia, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away after a courageous journey marked by strength, resilience, and unwavering love for his family. He is now at peace with the Lord, reunited in heaven with his precious daughter Maria, his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and brother.

Mauricio was born and raised in Havana, Cuba, where he grew up alongside his parents, grandmother, aunts, cousins and his younger brother. From a young age, he demonstrated intelligence and ambition, pursuing studies in medicine at the University of Havana with the dream of becoming a surgeon. After two years, he and his family made the difficult but hopeful decision to leave Cuba in search of freedom and a better future in the United States.

At the age of 20, Mauricio married the love of his life, Maria. Shortly thereafter, Maria became pregnant with their first child, and in a testament to their love, courage and determination, she traveled alone to the United States on April 24, 1961 while nine months pregnant. Mauricio followed her on May 9th joining her in Miami, Florida. Just seven days later, on May 16th they welcomed their first son, Mauricio Jr., into the world.

The young family began their life in the United States with humble beginnings, living with Mauricio’s aunts while he worked at a gas station before moving to an apartment in Hollywood, Florida. Their journey continued when they relocated to Trenton, New Jersey, where Mauricio searched for better opportunities. He soon secured a position with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York and moved his family to Brooklyn. After three years, Mauricio began working at General Motors in New York City, where he worked for nine years and expanded his family with three more children: Juan, Maria, and Augusto.

Mauricio later transferred with General Motors to Dayton, Ohio, bringing his wife and four children closer to extended family in Cincinnati. A year after settling in Dayton, they welcomed their youngest daughter, Teresa, completing what Mauricio proudly called “The Magnificent 7.”

Mauricio and Maria proudly became United States citizens through the legal process, embracing the opportunities and freedoms of America while building a life centered on family, hard work, and perseverance.

He went on to have their family home built in Beavercreek, Ohio, where they raised their five children and shared many cherished years before later downsizing to a new home in Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Through dedication and perseverance, Mauricio worked his way up to become a Systems Analyst at Delco Moraine. During his 32-year career with General Motors, he earned accolades and recognition for his perfect attendance and for his contributions to cost-saving initiatives, reflecting his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to excellence. He retired early at the age of 55.

Although his medical education in Cuba could not be formally continued in the United States, Mauricio never lost his passion for medicine and health. He remained a lifelong learner, educating himself through books and continually following advancements from institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins. He took great pride in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and exercise, a commitment that served him well, especially as he faced Parkinson’s disease with strength and resilience.

Mauricio was a man of faith, deep intelligence, strong work ethic, and unwavering dedication to his family. Above all, he was devoted to his beloved wife, Maria, and was a proud and loving father to five children, six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his perseverance, his love of learning, his strength in the face of adversity, his courage, humor, and the deep love he shared with his family. He was not just a provider and protector, but a guiding light—in every sense, their hero.

He is deeply loved by his family, will remain in their hearts forever and will be greatly missed.

Visitation, will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2300 South Smithville Road, Dayton, Ohio. Following the visitation, Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will immediately follow Mass, at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.
