Listen to Obituary

Maurice Edward Gardner, lovingly known as “Mory,” passed away peacefully with family on October 23, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. He was born on November 23, 1928, in Rarden, Ohio, and lived a long life marked by devotion to family, steady work, kindness, and good humor.

Maurice graduated from Rarden High School in 1947. He went on to work for Delco Products, where he dedicated 38 years of service before retiring in 1986. His long career reflected the reliability and commitment that were such a natural part of who he was.

He will be remembered as a funny, kind, loving, and generous man who put his family at the center of his life. A true family man, Maurice took great pride in being a father and grandfather, and his family was his proudest accomplishment. He found joy in spending time with those he loved, and that joy was returned many times over by the people closest to him.

Maurice also enjoyed the simple pleasures that gave life its warmth and rhythm. He liked bowling and golfing, rooting for the Dayton Flyers basketball team and the Cincinnati Reds, and pitching horseshoes. He was also a member of the Milton Club. Whether sharing a laugh, enjoying a game, or gathering with family, he brought warmth and generosity to the moments that mattered most.

He is survived by his daughter, Kaye (Grant) Smith, and his son, Wayne (Colleen) Gardner. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Amy (Doug) Shrout, Grant E. (Alicia) Smith, Sara (Terri Taggart) Gardner, and Megan Plassenthal, as well as his great-grandchildren, Grant B. Smith, Grace E. Smith, Cannon Plassenthal, Chloe Plassenthal, and Olivia Plassenthal. They carry forward the love, laughter, and strength he gave so freely, and his memory will remain a lasting blessing in their lives.

Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his mother, Ida Garnet Gardner; his father, Clarence Earl Gardner; his brothers, Ray Gardner and Paul Gardner; and his sister, Betty Abbott.

A graveside service will be held on October 28, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, 118 Woodland Ave, Dayton, Ohio 45409.
