Mary Joanne Shaw, a beacon of love and kindness, departed this world on January 8, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on May 22, 1943, in Gallipolis, Ohio, she embraced life with a spirit that drew friends from every corner, a tapestry of relationships woven with care and compassion.

Known for her loving nature, Joanne was the embodiment of warmth, making friends wherever she went. She always gave hugs to everyone and babies ran to her for her big hugs, especially her newest great-grandbaby Gwen and her mom, Marissa. Her presence brought light into the lives of those around her, and her very essence reflected a profound love for God, especially passed onto Kyle and Haylee, which she shared generously through her actions and uplifting spirit. Joanne took pride in being able to spread the word of God, believing in the power of faith and community--especially watching her granddaughter, Delilah sing and dance in church at the alter.

She found joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid shopper, Joanne reveled in the thrill of finding bargains that brought smiles not just to her but to those she loved. Her creative talents flourished through her crafting; she had a remarkable passion for crocheting, making wreaths, bows, and exquisite flower arrangements that adorned homes and hearts alike. Her beloved dog, Honey, stood as a cherished companion, always by her side.

Joanne is survived by her devoted children, Jeannette "Jeannie" Shaw, Matthew Shaw, and Theodore (Kathryn) Shaw, each carrying forward her legacy of love. She was the proud grandmother to Kyle (Lindsey) Shaw and Marissa (Donnie) Menke, and the adoring great-grandmother to Haylee Shaw, Lacy Favorite, (Shaw), Delilah Shaw, and Gwen E. Menke. The nurturing bond she formed with her brothers, Robert (Virginia) Smeltzer, James (Sue) Smeltzer, and Gary (Eve) Smeltzer, remained a cornerstone of her life, enriched by the love of her brothers-in-law, Johnny L. (Denise) Shaw and Rickey (Kathy) Shaw, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous extended family members and friends who cherished her dearly.

Her absence is felt deeply by many, including her beloved parents, Melvin and Bertina (Rutt) Smeltzer, and her late son, Eddie (Butch) Albert Shaw, Jr. Joanne was also preceded in death by her former husband, Eddie Albert Shaw, Sr., her in-laws, Emerson and Virginia Shaw, her brother William O. Smeltzer, her niece Carolyn Smeltzer, great-grandson Noah Elijah Shaw, and sister-in-law Linda Shaw. Each of these losses shaped her journey, yet Joanne's spirit transcended her trials, leaving a legacy rich in love, kindness, and faith.

A visitation to honor her life will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 6:00 PM, both taking place at the Miamisburg Assembly of God, located at 501 North 9th Street, Miamisburg, OH 45342. Following the funeral service please join the family for food (potluck) and fellowship in celebration of her life.

Joanne Shaw’s legacy of love, creativity, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. As we celebrate her life, may her memory serve as a gentle reminder of the beautiful connections formed in this life, and the enduring warmth of a heart that truly cared for others. Joanne will also be remembered for always saying and believing: "Kill them with Kindness." Hugs to all the guys at Kyle Shaw's Whole Truth Ministries.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hospice of Dayton who provided her with great care in her final days.
