Marine Merrett, age 82, of Dayton, Ohio journeyed to her eternal resting place on Thursday, June 2, 2011. She was preceded in death by husband, Jessie Merrett; three brothers, Matthew Cathey of Benton Harbor, Michigan; Maxcell Cathey of Vallejo, California, and Walter Cathey, Jr., of Dayton, Ohio; one sister, Norma Buchanan of Dayton, Ohio; a loving sister in law, Claudine Mines of Atlanta, Georgia; a loving nephew, Paul Buchanan Sr., of Dayton, Ohio, and best friend, Elgean Cospy of Dayton, Ohio.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory five children; Anthony Merrett; Marcus Merrett; Renee Merrett; Theresa (Kenneth) Young, all of Dayton, Ohio, and Michelle Merrett of Hamilton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and one aunt, Audie Mae Cathey.
Marine was born in Lexington, Tennessee to the union of Walter Cathey,Sr., and Willie Mae Douglass, the granddaughter of renowned abolitionist, Frederick Douglass. Marine received her primary education in the Lexington, Tennessee public school system after which she moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan, and later to Dayton, Ohio. Marine worked many years in the janitorial/food service industries, and later as a domestic worker. She was a lifelong member of Prayer Garden Church of God in Christ, under the late Elder James J. McMahon, Sr., and served on the Usher Board. Marine loved the lord and had a smile that lit up any room. She loved singing old church hymns like her favorite (I Come To The Garden Alone).
A funeral service will be held on Friday June 10, 2011 at 12:00 pm at St. Paul Global Outreach Ministries, 2050 Germantown Pike, where the family will recieve friends for one hour prior from 11:00am-12:00pm. Burial to follow at West Memory Gardens.
