Marie R. Wellman

Marie R. Wellman, 82, died Sunday morning with her son by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, a World War II veteran, Arthur L. Wellman; her father William; her mother Juanita; her brothers Lawrence, James and Joe; and a sister Eva. She is survived by her only child Brian; her sisters Billie, Rubie and Ruth; and several nieces and nephews, including her brother Joe's daughter Cindy, Darlene and Nita; her sister Billie's children Dwayne, Ross and Beth.
Marie played basketball in grade school, high school and on J. Edgar Hoover's FBI team in the 1960s. She always remembered fondly her time in Washington D.C. with her roommates Ada and Esther. She was an avid bowler in the 1970s and 1980s, earning several team and individual trophies and awards in league and tournament play. Marie served many years as league Secretary in the McCook's Saturday Night Mixed League and enjoyed a cherished camaraderie with her bowling buddies Betty, Beverly, Bessie, Joanne and Miriam in McCook's Tuesday Night Ladies League. She was often called upon to serve as scorekeeper for the ABC Men's Tournament at Varsity Lanes.
A one-time physical education teacher, she taught locally at Julienne High School before putting her accounting skills to work as a Financial Analyst at Systems Research Laboratories (and its subsequent iterations) in the Landing Gear Test Facility on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Marie had a green thumb and enjoyed growing many types of houseplants, some of which she successfully maintained for well over 20 years. Later in life, Marie enjoyed traveling, often with her son, and checked one off her bucket list, to visit all of the Lower 48 States in her lifetime.
The family notes that donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 300 W. Hudson Ave., Dayton, OH 45406 or flowers may be sent to Newcomer Funeral Home and Crematory, 4104 Needmore Road, Dayton, OH 45424.
A graveside service will be held at Dayton National Cemetery on with a reception for the family later the same day. Friends should contact the family for burial and reception details.
