Marianne Lina Sharrett, beloved mother to four generations, and friend to all for 97 years was led to the loving embrace of her Savior on the October 17, 2026. Geissen, Germany welcomed Marianne on the fifth day of October in 1929 opening a long, loving and meaningful life, marked with resilience, dedication to her family, and a joyful spirit touching many lives.
At the end of World War II, Marianne met George Firth, a Lieutenant in the United States Army. George was her first love and by many accounts, the love of her life. But for every time there’s a season and George passed on November 10, 1969.
Attracted to military men, she remarried a retired Air Force Major, Louis Sharrett. Lou provided her the love, security and companionship in this next stage of her life. The seasons turned yet again with Lou passing on August 19, 2013.
These two marriages brought a fruitful legacy of five children, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. The names of this loving legacy are listed at the end of this remembrance.
As an army wife, she traveled from Germany to Oakland to Chicago and finally Dayton. In Chicago, she applied the medical training she received in Germany as a nurse at College Hill Hospital. She continued her services as a nurse in Dayton Ohio at Grandview Hospital, and finally as a surgical nurse for an oral surgeon. Mom loved surgery and always wanted to share her experiences with the family. We just wish she hadn’t done it during dinner.
Mom’s service and sharing with others continued through the ministry of Christ. She was a regular attendee on both Sunday and weekday services, as well as a participant and leader in a number of Christian women’s organizations. When volunteers were needed, Marianne raised her hand. It was her strong, love and faith in her Savior that moved Marianne, through a life of love, friendship, and service.
While her life evidenced strong relationships in the United States, she was always very, very close to her German family and heritage. Her younger sister, Elli, lived with George and Marianne for a short while before she married Harold Needham. Elli spent the final months of her life with Marianne at Bethany Village. Marianne kept in contact with her brothers, Hermann (Inge) and Karl (Rita) throughout her life. Her family here and abroad were always on her mind and in her heart.
Marianne also found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved to cook, bake, sew, play games and spend time outdoors in her garden. She especially enjoyed hosting family gatherings which created memories that will be treasured for generations.
Marianne‘s life was one of remarkable length punctuated with many transitions. Born and raised in Germany, she built a life in a new homeland, pursued a career in nursing, raised a loving family, lived and lost a loving husband twice. Through every chapter, she remained a loving presence in lives of those around her. Her story became part of the family legacy that will continue through her descendants for generations to come.
As you go through your day and the rest of your life, please keep loving thoughts of Marianne in your heart as she will continue her love for her; children: Monika, Walter (Sue), Susan (Mike), Mark, and Elizabeth (Gary); Grandchildren: Erika (Mike), Coledo (Dan), Matthew (Lorra), Nathan (Carrie), Jonathan (Amanda), Alexis (Peter), Mollie (Cody); Great Grandchildren: Derrick, Kaitlynn, Kennedy, Isacc, Lorelie, Zackery, Elijah; Great, Great Grandchildren: Adrian, Gabriel, Brianna, Julian, Ryan, Christian, Yazmine, Kevin.
