Lorraine Marion Slater, a cherished matriarch and devoted caregiver, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, in Beavercreek, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 24, 1921, in Winona, Minnesota, Lorraine led a remarkable life marked by her dedication to both her profession and her family.
Lorraine's career as a Naval Nurse and Nursing Instructor spanned various locations, where her quietly strong presence inspired many. Her commitment to nursing was born from a desire to help others, a calling she fulfilled after attending Nursing School in Rochester, Minnesota. This foundation in nursing shaped her life, allowing her to nurture countless patients and also her own family.
She served her country proudly by serving in the United States Navy during World War II. She was a woman of immense patience and tolerance, traits that endeared her to all who knew her. Lorraine approached life with a calm and steadfast spirit, fostering an environment of love and understanding in her home. Her dedication to family was evident in everything she did, from her loving care as a mother to her adoring ways as a grandmother and great-grandmother.
In her leisure, Lorraine found joy in the simple pleasures of life, engaging in hobbies such as reading, knitting, and tending to her garden. These pastimes reflected her caring nature, as she often created warm spaces filled with love and beauty for her family to enjoy.
Lorraine was the beloved wife of the late Paul Slater, and she is now reunited with him in spirit. She also mourned the loss of her daughter Barbara Slater, as well as her parents, Ben and Delia Drussell, and her siblings, Ross and Ruth. Their memories remain a treasured part of her legacy.
She is survived by her loving children, Susan (William) Ringle and Michael (Anne) Slater, who carry forward her values. Lorraine took pride in her role as a grandmother to William C. Ringle, Rachel Ringle, Chad Slater, and Tara Slater, and she celebrated the joy of being a great-grandmother to Jack Ringle, Garrett Slater and Blake Slater, imparting her love and wisdom to the younger generations.
As we remember Lorraine, we honor a woman of unwavering strength and grace. Her spirit will live on through the countless lives she touched, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know her.
Services will be held privately by her family and she will be laid to rest at Dayton National Cemetery, alongside her husband.
