Lori Maria Balster of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on January 9, 2026, at the age of 52. Born on April 7, 1973, in Dayton, she demonstrated remarkable resilience from the very beginning of her life. Lori was born prematurely, weighing just 2½ pounds, an experience that shaped her life's journey and inspired her commitment to thrive against the odds.
Lori's educational journey began at Alter High School, where she laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree in chemistry and English, followed by a master's degree in English language and literature from the University of Dayton. Throughout her academic pursuits, she displayed a steadfast dedication to learning, which continued to fuel her professional career.
Her extensive experience in the field of chemistry spanned over three decades. Most recently, Lori held the position of chief executive officer of Knowledge Imports LLC, a role she undertook in 2020. In addition to this, she was a prolific writer and consultant, contributing her expertise to various fields since 2014. Lori’s professional journey included significant contributions as a chemist at Systems Research Laboratories, Innovative Scientific Solutions, and the University of Dayton Research Institute, where she engaged in notable projects for the United States Department of Defense.
Lori's talents extended beyond her professional roles; she was also a cherished author, known for her fiction book "Cassie Meets Melvin" and numerous published articles in philosophy and chemistry. Her accomplishments earned her accolades such as the Publications Recognition Program Award from American Mensa and the ACS Freshmen Chemistry Award, reflecting her dedication to her craft and her willingness to mentor others in her fields of interest.
Beyond her professional life, Lori was deeply committed to her community. She volunteered with the Girl Scouts of the United States of America and the Society for Improvement of Conditions of Stray Animals, dedicating her time and energy to causes she believed in. Lori was also a member of the American Chemical Society and American Mensa, embodying both intelligence and compassion.
Lori is survived by her loving husband, James A. Tarkany; her two daughters, Gretchen A. (Alex) Brookline and Sophia M. Tarkany; two brothers, Gary A. (Anne) Balster and Pat (Lisa) Balster; two sisters, Brenda A. (Richard) Hilinski and Barb L. (Dan) Ulrich; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will remember her kindness, vibrant spirit, and unwavering commitment to those around her.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn J. Balster, and her father, Walter J. Balster.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 11:00 AM until the time of Mass at 12:00 PM at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Dayton, OH.
