Lester Francis Smith, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on 3/10/26, with his daughters, Joy Tucker and Miriam Yarnall, by his side. He was born on 04/06/42 to Homer and Ethel Smith and grew up alongside his sisters, Miriam Grapel and Genevieve Smith, and his brother, Daniel Smith.
In 1961, he married Nora Jean Bertram, and they remained married until her death in 2023. Through their marriage, Lester became a stepfather at a young age and devoted himself to raising Larry Contaser, Joy Tucker, Kenneth Contaser, and Martha Jane Wright, and was the father of Steven Smith and Miriam “Annie” Yarnall.
Lester retired from Chrysler Air Temp in Dayton (’95) and was proud to say he lived longer than he worked. He was a proud Freemason who attained the 32nd degree and served as Past Master of the former Conservancy 661 Lodge at the Dayton Masonic Temple. He remained a lifelong member of the combined Millennium Lodge. He loved to play his guitar and sing for all who would listen, often sharing his music at campgrounds and churches across the United States. Lester was raised in the Brethren in Christ Church and remained active in his faith throughout his life, serving as a music director and deacon in the churches he attended. His most recent church home was Woodland Hills Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children and brother-in-law, Fount Bertram (Anna). Many nieces and nephews, several grandchildren, with a special grandchild, Will (Buddy) Hurst Jr. Several great-grandchildren, especially those closest to him: Evelynn, Claudia, and Aydin Shade.
At his request, there will be no services.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” — Matthew 25:23
