Leavy Holt Riggs, Jr.

May 16, 1945 — November 14, 2017

Leavy Holt "L.H." Riggs, Jr. passed away on November 14, 2017. L.H. was born on May 16, 1945 in Morehead City, NC to Leavy and Olive Riggs. He was their fourth child and only son. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Doris and Reber. He is survived by his oldest sister, Annis Beavers of Douglasville, GA.

Leavy attended Newport N.C. Consolidated School and graduated in 1964. After High School he attended N.C. State University for a period but left to marry his school sweetheart, Sue Elaine Gerock. They have three children, James Riggs, who passed away suddenly in 2013; Shannon Riggs, passed away in 1996 due to asthma complications; and Christopher Riggs (wife, Ruby Riggs) who reside in Crestline, Ohio. Leavy is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica Riggs, Joshua Riggs, Cody Riggs, Jonathan Dowdell, Jamie Riggs, Elise Riggs, and William Riggs; three great-grandchildren; and loving niece, nephews, cousins, and friends.

L.H. had a long and distinguished civil service career with the Department of Defense. His career began at Cherry Point Marine Corps Naval Air Rework Facility as an Apprentice Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic. Shortly after completing the four year apprenticeship, a reduction-in-force resulted in the decision to transfer to USAF Air Logistics Center in Warner Robins, GA. After a couple of years in aircraft maintenance, L.H. was selected for an upward mobility training program to become an Equipment Specialist. The move to Warner Robins enabled L.H. to complete his studies. He graduated from Georgia College with BBA in 1978. That same year he was selected for promotion to Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio Acquisition Logistics Manager and Acquisition Program Manager. These programs included Propulsion, B-1B Bomber, and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. He ended his civil service career in the F-22 Program Office as a Logistics Division Deputy.

L.H. was a lifelong Baptist and a member of Tyrian Lodge #111 F&AM in Warner Robins, Georgia for over 40 years.

To honor his request for simplicity and no ritual; his family will have an informal gathering and sharing of memories to honor L.H.'s life and to celebrate his legacy.

L.H. had only two requests: to remember his family in your prayers and daily activities. When you have a chance; play a game of putt-putt golf. Be sure to play a few holes Left-Handed (L.H.) like he played the game.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in L.H.'s memory to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, or Hospice of Miami Valley.
