Lawrence Victor (Vic) Fornes, 91, of Dayton, Ohio and Mackinaw City, Mich., passed away Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017.

Vic was born in Findlay, Ohio on Feb. 26, 1926. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Helen; his parents, George and Crystal Fornes of Findlay; his sisters Helen Lucas, Lillian (Schwartz) Zwally, Marie Snyder, Rita Damon, Fern Marohn and Irene (Morrison) Ufheil; and his brothers Clarence, Wayne and George Fornes.

He is survived by his sons Michael (Karen) of Mackinaw City, Mich., Mark (Tammy) of Kettering, Ohio and Joseph of Dayton; his daughters Dottie Tankersley of Englewood, Colo., and Michelle Fornes of Miamisburg, Ohio. He will be missed by granddaughters Danielle (Patrick) Quinlan, Renee (Chris) Tamlyn, Aimee (Eric) Nelsen, Kristen (Rich), Brooke, Taylor and Margo Fornes and Amberly Campbell. In addition, he is survived by his great-grandchildren Evan and Elena Tamlyn, Levi and Brooks Nelsen, Elliott Quinlan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vic was a charter member of St. Henry Parish, a scout leader and baseball coach for many years in the South Dayton area. He served as a volunteer for Hospice of Dayton and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program for 25 years. In addition, he was a foster parent for more than 20 years.

After working for 28 years at the National Cash Register Company and 14 years at Capital Uniform Rental, he retired in 1989 and traveled extensively with Helen in all 50 states and more than 30 foreign countries.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Marine Division, Vic served in the South Pacific during the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa and the occupation of Japan. He was named to the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2012.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 at St. Henry Parish, 6696 Springboro Rd., Dayton, with visitation to be held from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Vic's memory may be made to Hospice of Dayton, the Dayton VA Hospice or the charity of one's choice.
