Larry “Opie” Hill, Sr., age 85, of Huber Heights, passed away peacefully listening to Willie Nelson’s On The Road Again in the presence of loved ones on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. He was born March 16, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan to Lonnie Brown Hill and Ruth Mae Coleman Hill. Emphasizing his everlasting faith, he was baptized on September 1, 1940 at Standing Rock Methodist Church in Dover, Tennessee by his grandfather, John Edgar Coleman.
Larry was a hard worker and always ensured he provided for his family. In his early working years, he worked three jobs at one time. As a patriot, his love of country was demonstrated early in his life with his enlistment in the Ohio Army National Guard on March 21, 1957. He served his country in the artillery unit proudly for three years. Afterwards, he worked in the tool and die industry for several years - several Ford dealerships, International Harvester, New Britain Machine, Midwestern, and PCU.
Larry was deeply invested in a different variety of hobbies. He was an avid bowler. He participated in several weekly leagues and tournaments with family and friends. He also enjoyed golfing with family and friends. He loved spending time with family whenever he could. He loved grilling his special chicken. He enjoyed watching old, classic westerns and listening to tunes by Willie Nelson. His unforgettable smile and his joy for life could be felt by everyone he met. He will be remembered as a compassionate, loving, and caring person with a gentle spirit.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sons, Edward Ritchson, James Givens, and Kenneth Givens; brother, Mike Cron; and two great-grandchildren (Blumenstock).
Survivors include his life partner of 46 years Claudette Ritchson, seven children, Luke Hill (Mary) of Beavercreek, Ohio; Steve Hill (Sandy) of Englewood, Ohio; Cheryl Worlow of Okeechobee, Florida; Lynne Hill of Florida; Lisa Hill of Torrance, California; Leslie Hill of Florida; and David Ritchson (Vickie) of Niceville, Florida; mother of 6 children, Sandra Hill, of Florida; three sisters, Rebecca May (Richard) of Westerville, Ohio, Debbie Hill of McEwen, Tennessee, and Donna Cron of Dayton, Ohio; brother, James Hill (Debbie) of McEwen, Tennessee; fifteen grandchildren, Melissa Zehring (Joel), L.J. Hill (Erin), Doug Hill (Liz), Kevin Hill (Ellie), Jennifer Wagoner, Kyla Mullins (Alex), Ryan Worlow, Aalia Murphy-Rodriguez (Dionicio), Matthew Hill, Kimberly Blumenstock (Eric), Jacqueline Givens, Jimmy Givens, Eric Ritchson (Crystal), Alan Ritchson (Catherine), and Brian Ritchson (Rachel); twenty-two great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a wonderful extended family of cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road, Dayton, Ohio. A celebration of life service will follow at 3:00 pm.
