Kathryn Ann Durkee, lovingly known as Kate, a woman whose warmth and joy touched all who knew her, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026. Born on July 19, 1933, Kate's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and cherished moments that will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. She retired as the Customer Service Superintendent of the Montgomery County Sanitary Department after working there for 34 years.
Kate was a vibrant soul who found happiness in many simple pleasures. Her love for the opera was a window into her deep appreciation for art and music, while her adventurous spirit shone through the countless hiking trips she shared with Dan. Whether playing cards or going bowling, solving puzzles or tackling crosswords, she approached every pastime with enthusiasm and a sense of fun. Above all, Kate treasured time spent with her family, filling their lives with laughter, love, and unwavering support. Her affection extended to every family pet, reflecting her caring nature and boundless compassion.
Family was the cornerstone of Kate’s life. She is survived by her beloved children, Patti (Ron) Rentz and Dan (Kim) Bunger; her devoted daughter-in-law, Teresa Eastep; and a cherished circle of grandchildren: Sara (Frank) Brennan, Ben (Sara) Rentz, Todd (Jennifer) Bunger, Sam (Tiffany) Bunger, Lindsey (Jesse) Miles, and Cody Standafer. The joy of her great-grandchildren—Brock (Abigail) Brennan, Ryan Miles, and Carly Miles—brought endless happiness to her later years. Kate also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who carry forward her legacy of kindness and generosity.
Though her husband, David Durkee, and her son, Tony Bunger, have preceded her in death, their memories remain forever entwined with hers, a testament to a life rich in love and family bonds.
Kate lived fully, laughed freely, and loved deeply. She taught those around her the importance of cherishing every moment, embracing life’s joys, and finding happiness in the company of family and friends. As we remember her, we hold close the light she brought into our lives—a light that will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
A special, heart-felt thank you goes to Dan and Kim, who took excellent care of her for two years when she lived with them. The family would also like to thank the staff at Vienna Springs Campus and Hospice of Dayton for the care and love they provided Kate.
Family and friends are welcome to a visitation from 11:00am to 12:00pm on Friday, June 12, 2026 at Newcomer Kettering Chapel, 3940 Kettering Blvd., where Kate's service will begin at 12:00pm. Following the service, Kate will be laid to rest with David at Calvary Cemetery.
