Joseph Francis Moriarty, age 84, of Dayton, passed away on August 6, 2026. Joseph was born in Springfield, MA to the late Joseph and Mary Moriarty.
He is survived by daughter, Mary (Jeff) Bedrick; granddaughters, Lila and Madelyn Bedrick; brother, John Moriarty; nieces, Jennifer and Lynn; nephews, John and Brian; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Joseph attended Classical High School in Springfield, MA, graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and obtained a master’s degree from Indiana University. After teaching for a short time at Wright State University, Joseph spent most of his career at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. After a 45 year career, he retired from NASIC at Wright-Patterson earlier this summer.
In his free time, he enjoyed playing tennis and ballroom dancing. He had a large collection of tennis trophies. He was an avid reader, extremely knowledgeable about history, and always eager to discuss how history had shaped current events. He was particularly enthusiastic about engaging his granddaughters in discussions about history, frequently purchased books for them, and always encouraged them to learn as much as possible.
Visitation will be held from 2:00pm-3:00pm on Saturday September 12 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd. Beavercreek) where a memorial service will be held at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation are appreciated.
