Listen to Obituary

Johnny “John” Leo Carrell, age 81, of Tipp City, Ohio, entered eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 26, 2026.

John was born on October 23, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio, to John and Irma (Sherwood) Carrell. He graduated from Beavercreek High School in Beavercreek, Ohio, and he attended Miami University.

He married Lawanda (Gardner) Carrell on November 4, 1989. Together they have one child, Heather (Joseph) Lampton of Huber Heights. He is also survived by sisters Donna Gehring of Beavercreek and Sherry Cress of Oklahoma; sisters-in-law Cindy Gardner and Donna Bryan; brothers-in-law Kelly Gardner and Kenneth Kapaun (all of Hillsboro, Ohio); several nieces and nephews; and best friend, Bill Rowell. He is preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws (Kenneth and Rosalie Gardner), and brothers-in-law Raymond Gehring and Gary Cress.

John started his career as a Teacher’s Assistant for Dayton Public Schools and then later, and for most of his career, became a sales representative, earning many sales-of-the-year awards. In sales, he was determined to close the deal because he wanted the customers to get what they needed. He never met a stranger and could hold conversations with anyone. His last position was driving the shuttle for Wright State and Sinclair students. He bonded with his students, would play their music, and bring joy to them during the ride, trying to speak to the multicultural riders. John loved everyone and accepted all as they are.

John could always be found in a sweater vest and with a smile on his face. John was a DJ in the 70s, loved every genre of music, and knew every song and the singer who sang it. John was an avid sports fanatic. John played softball for years and then became a coach. After his daughter was born, he then helped to coach her t-ball and softball teams, passing on his love of sports. In his later years, John developed a love of golf, including a trip to Pebble Beach, CA, on his 70th birthday. When not playing sports, he was watching sports on TV. He could talk to the best of sports experts regarding stats, no matter the sport. His all-time favorite team was the Cincinnati Bengals.

John embraced life’s joys through cherished family gatherings and playful moments with their beloved dog, Precious, and cat, Laken, and all of the fur babies they have had. His vibrant spirit and loving nature left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered, creating a beautiful legacy that will always be remembered. John was a devoted and loving husband and best daddy in the world. He loved to watch movies and series with his wife, just the two of them, because one of them picked out a good one. Heather and her daddy bonded over the TV show “One Tree Hill,” watching it together since it first came on the air when Heather was in 8th grade. John and Heather made many wonderful trips to Wilmington, NC, where the show was filmed. John loved God, family, and golf-in that order.

John would want everyone to know his favorite Bible verse, Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse got him and his family through many earthly battles.
