John A. Schell, a dedicated electrical engineer and proud veteran of the United States Air Force, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026. Born on March 25, 1946, John lived a life marked by quiet determination, intellectual curiosity, and a devotion to family and country.
He pursued his education at Penn State University, where he laid the foundation for a distinguished career in electrical engineering. During his service in the United States Air Force, John’s expertise and passion for technology flourished. He was the chief avionics engineer on the development of the SR-71 blackbird and U-2R during the Cold War. One of his proudest accomplishments during retirement was authoring a nationally acclaimed paper on the SA-2 and U-2, which he had the honor of receiving an award in Washington, DC. During retirement, John also gave presentations and tours at the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum-a testament to his profound knowledge and dedication to his field.
Known for his quiet demeanor, John often reserved his voice for topics close to his heart-engineering innovations and his uniquely bad dad jokes that brought smiles to family and friends alike. A lover of golf in his younger years, he cherished time spent in never-ending happy hours and memorable vacations with his beloved family. Among these moments, his fondest memories were those shared with his grandchildren, where his gentle spirit shone brightly.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosalyn Schell. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Joanne Schell, who was his steadfast partner throughout life’s journey. He leaves behind his children, Terri (Jim) Roberts and Scott (Sally) Schell, who carry forward his legacy of integrity and kindness. His grandchildren, Hayden Roberts, Grace Roberts (Cade Kadel), and Megan Schell, will forever remember their grandfather’s warmth and wisdom. John’s life was further enriched by his brothers, Gary (Chris) Schell and Alan (Terri) Schell, along with a loving host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were fortunate to know him.
John A. Schell’s legacy is one of quiet strength, generosity, and intellect. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were privileged to be part of his life.
