In Loving Memory of John Hobbie

February 2, 1951 – July 15, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Hobbie—devoted father, proud grandfather, decorated veteran, and lifelong public servant. John passed away unexpectedly on July 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and unwavering love.

Born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida, John spent his youth helping at his family’s motel, the Bluebird Motel, and enjoying the sun, surf, and saltwater. He was an avid fisherman and surfer, with a lifelong connection to the ocean that never left him.

John’s life was one of service. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a Pararescuemen (PJ)—an elite team dedicated to rescue and recovery missions in combat and austere environments. He later went on to join the Army Ranger Reserves. His courage, grit, and selflessness were defining traits, not only in the military but throughout his life.

After his service, John continued protecting and serving others as a member of the Port Orange Police Department. He later settled in Ohio, where he worked in several police departments and eventually served as the Chief Felony Investigator to the Athens County Prosecutor.

John was known not just for what he did—but for who he was. He was kind, fair, compassionate, confident, and generous. He was a loving father and the most supportive person anyone could ask for. To his daughter, Megan, he was a rock—unshakable, unwavering, and endlessly loving. His guidance and unconditional support shaped her life in every way.

More than anything, John adored being “Pepaw.” His two grandchildren, Sutton and Wyatt, were the absolute lights of his life. He celebrated every one of their milestones, encouraged their dreams, and cherished every moment he spent with them—whether that meant sharing stories, sneaking them treats, or simply being their biggest fan. His love for them was deep and limitless.

John is survived by his daughter, Megan Hobbie; his beloved grandchildren, Sutton and Wyatt; his ex-wife and close friend, Debbie Hobbie; and a wide circle of friends, extended family members, and former colleagues who were lucky to know him.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday, July 27th from 2 PM to 5 PM at Mack’s Tavern, where friends and family are invited to share memories, laughter, and love in honor of the man who meant so much to so many.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John’s name to any Veteran’s Association of your choosing.

He was tough as they come, but his heart was soft and generous. He served with courage, lived with integrity, and loved without limits. We will miss him more than words can express.
