John Robert Greene Jr., age 77, of South Boston, passed away October 19, 2025. John was born in South Boston, Massachusetts on July 4, 1948 to the late John Sr. and Monica Greene.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis Greene; sister-in-law, Teresa Metzmaier; sister, Barbara; niece, Lisa (Steve) Nordmeyer; nephew, Albert (Katie) Metzmaier; great-nephew, Marc Metzmaier; great-niece, Elisa (Tyler) Tavelero; great-niece, Jackie (Sam) Blike.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Green Beret Medic in the Special Forces. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Parachute Badge. After his military service, John continued to protect and serve his community as a City of Boston Firefighter, where he was honored with the Medal of Valor for his bravery.
He loved hockey, jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, steak with mushrooms, dogs, diet Pepsi, bread with butter, oatmeal cookies - not necessarily in that order. John prided himself on his bad jokes to make people laugh. He loved to see people smile. John was an excellent electric guitar player and loved all genres of music.
A man of many hats, John had done everything from driving a taxi to bartending to working in real estate. But no matter the job, he approached life with the same goal: to live it to the fullest and share every experience with his beloved wife.
Everyone that John met, he touched their lives in a meaningful way and was always trying to leave you smiling and laughing.
John will be laid to rest with military honors at Dayton National Cemetery (4400 W Third St, Dayton) on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 1:00pm.
