John A. Godfrey, Sr., age 73, of Dayton, formerly of Shreveport, LA; went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 4, 2017. He was born June 11, 1943 in Shreveport , LA to the late Beatrice and Riley Godfrey, Sr. John proudly and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 - 1972 during the Vietnam War. After his service, John went on to attend business school and earned his associates degree. He then went on to become a welder for Rotchild and then Riley Beards.
John married Alice Faye King on March 8, 1969 in Dallas, Texas. The two attended and were members of Lake Bethlehem Baptist Church in Shreveport. John and Alice moved to the Dayton area in 2008. John was very enthusiastic about the care of his yard and his car. He was a caring, compassionate, and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Rayfield Godfrey.
John leaves to cherish his memory, loving wife of 48 years, Alice Faye King Godfrey; children, Ronnie Godfrey, Rodney (Jasmine) Godfrey, and John A. (Ever Shantel) Godfrey, Jr.; 8 grandchildren; sisters, Viola Battles Godfrey and Mary Lou Moore Godfrey; brother, Riley Godfrey, Jr.; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of John's life will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home - Beavercreek Chapel at 1pm. Visitation to take place prior to the service from 11-1. Burial and Military Service to take place on Monday morning (May 8, 2017) at 9:30am at The Dayton National Cemetery.
